The other day I mentioned about getting in to the FFXIV beta testing, and I did get to play some yesterday, so I'll cover some of that below, but first, the personal life stuff... We recently got ourselves a nice large 6 person tent, so that we could go camping later. We've already planned a trip to camp wilderness over at Disney sometime in August, so we needed to get the tent of course. Now we just have to get some sleeping bags, a nice quiet fan, and some bug-stuff to keep the bugs away when we inevitably will have to get up in the middle of the night to take a child to the bathroom. The kids wanted to test it out the other day, so that's what we did... camped out in the front yard. They didn't get much sleep...not because they loved the tent, but because "the bugs are too loud" ... or "the ground is too hard" ... Oh well, that's the life of camping LOL.
So, that appointment that I had to do the re-evaluation on Tuesday wasn't even that. It was just an appointment to watch the guy fill out the paperwork to request for an active review of my paperwork and eventual seeing of someone to have them check my range of motion and other miscellaneous things officially so I can possibly get an increase in my disability %'age. The guy though did state that my disability classification may not just jump to 50, but rather it's next step up would possibly be 60% . I'm not complaining, but I do hope that I get that increase, if not more.Just talked with the 'nurse' for my normal VA doc today, and she's supposed to forward my request for review of what the neurosurgeon consultation wrote in my file ... Can't say enough about my desire to actually get some relief in pain... at this point I don't care what it is that I've got to do, I'd like to get some form of relief. Granted the doc got me some meds (Tramadol), it doesn't fully relieve the pain... it gets me a small bit of coverage, basically enough for me to get to sleep. Unfortunately the dosage that he's recommending me, which is twice daily, causes me severe dizziness, so I have to only take one a day ... but I may just start taking it the recommended dose just until I go in for my interview, as I've not been sleeping well lately.
Right, so,

FFXIV ... Bloom effect is ... CRAZY!!
Yea, I probably should have edited off part of the chat and stuff, but meh. And technically I don't think I'm supposed to post any pictures up, but again ... meh.
Right then, As evidenced with the pic above, there is a very active bloom effect that is absolutely insane at times. Other times it's not so blinding:

But you can still tell it's there.
Here's what I've discerned so far from the limited time I've gotten in beta, and some of this is in the process of being changed. No macros yet (I say yet, as they're working on putting it in soon). No class changing, mainly at least. There are 4 basic "classes" with different main functions of each... One being that of weapon using type, one of caster type, one of gatherer type, and the last of crafter type. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean if you've chosen to be a gatherer that you can't do some melee, but to do so, you have to get another weapon and equip that.
Most everything requires you to use your MP to do moves. What this means is there is no 'auto-attacking' on monsters. You have to use an ability to do anything. The bad part to this, is if your game crashes, or if you loose connection to the server, your character is doing absolutely NOTHING. And, more than likely you'll just die. I experienced this very thing unfortunately and it kind of sucked.
The other bad part currently about getting DC'd (crash, lost connection, whatever), is their quest system... or as they call it, the "leve" system, in game called "Guildleve" no, not guild leAve, or guild leveL ... just guildleve ... strange yes, but meh, to each their own. Now, there are some quests that a person in town can give out (currently there's only one town to start in, and the beta's capped to level 30 so I suppose around level 30 you'll be going to visit other towns or something I dunno) ... anyway, this person gives you some que... I mean guildleve ... that will have an objective, now you have to travel to the designated area, find the aether crystal or whatever it is (sorry, beta's down right now I think so can't go hop in to check), interact with it (I'll explain that quirk in detail in a bit), and activate the guildleve. At the time you activate it, your minimap will show a circle where your quest monsters will be spawned, or if it's off your minimap, it will show you arrows to which direction to go to. This is a good thing though, as the guildleve system is a timed quest thing, wherein you are given, say, 30 minutes to kill XX number of XXXX's. When you get to the designated spawn area, you'll possibly see some of the creature you're after, with little 'notes' next to their name. These are YOUR (and your party if you have one) creatures for the quest. Those outside of your party or not on the same quest, will not even see these creatures. This means that all you have to do is find them and kill them. Bad bit though about all of this, is that if you get DC'd, you drop the active guildleve apparently. And as it stands currently, you can't re-pick it up for 2 days time... now weather that's 2 REAL LIFE days, or 2 in game days, I'm not sure... but it sucks either way. If you log out, or get DC'd you may drop the quest without you knowing it, or it may stay active ... either way, that timer doesn't stop when you log out though, it's in real time... so if you loose connection, on that LAST mob, and only have 5 minutes left on your timer, by the time you log back in, you'll more than likely be dead, and also probably not have enough time (if you even got back in before the time was already up) to get back to the creatures to kill.
Now, the interact thing I stated earlier. Most things that require you to do something with some object in the world, you have to interact with them... now how do you know how to do this? Well, at the top of your screen is a little buff/debuff area I suppose (as the weakness effect appears in the same area), a little exclamation point pops up. Hover over it? no tooltip like some other things. Well, this means that if you open your MENU (either the Home key, or the - key on the keypad) you'll see at the top a new section to interact with whatever's in the area, be it elevator, crystal, mining point, etc.
I've not started a gatherer or crafter class yet, as from what I'm reading on the beta tester's forums, these classes need some serious working on. But, I think that some of the things I currently see as "set in stone" (like choosing your class) are not so much so, but just your chosen profession at the start. Apparently you can purchase different weapons, equip them (through some very difficult methods apparently) and then you get different skills (which you also have to swap out your old weapon/tool's abilities to be able to use) ... And of course, using these weapon types will improve as you go...I THINK ... as I've not gotten a chance to test it out ... that when you change your weapon / tool that your class changes as well, and whatever you do you gain exp on that class. Again, don't take this for truth until I get to check it out ...
There is this new thing that is in the game though, they call them "Retainers" ... no, not those awful things that go in your mouth ... These recruit-able people can do minor things to help you. One of which, is to "man" your bazaar or marketplace spot. Currently in beta the retainers don't cost us anything, but I'd suppose by their wording, they will cost something when the game goes live. You also will have to rent your space in the marketplace to have a booth going. There are many marketplaces in each town by what the forums state from the devs (but as I said, other towns are not startable areas currently). I think that also the retainers can actually assist you out in the field by fighting with you, but I've not tried the thing out yet.
As you are out fighting, you will gain TP, which, if you remember from FFXI, you use TP to do some powerful move, and they can link with other people's TP moves to be able to create some devistating combos ... well, at least that's the way it used to work in FFXI... building parties around skillchains ... ANYWAY ... in FFXIV, a new method is in the works for using that TP. Unfortunately it doesn't seem you can do it solo, but that may just be me not doing it right. But they've got it so one person in the party can enter a command into the "battle regimen", then the next person in line would do the same with one of their abilities, and then someone executes the regimen... the skills are used in the order they appear in the list, and I gather (again, as I've not gotten in a party, nor seen anything on it really) if the skills link together, some extra damage will be done, and TP will be used. I'll see if I can't get in a party and see if I can't put something together and see what happens. In solo play it seems largely useless, as no-one else is there to "follow" your move, and when I was trying to do something, it would say I couldn't do it for some reason.
Currently the UI in the game is largely movable. You can move most everything, but not some things unfortunately. Like for example, I've yet to find out how to move the action bar, if it even IS movable. I'd like to stretch the chat box across the bottom ALA FFXI, but you can't do that due to the action bar being across the bottom middle, a small bit above the bottom of the screen. Now, this action bar doesn't always appear, so if you're in passive mode (not ready to attack), the bar goes away. There are other things I've found that I can't move around, like the buff/debuff bar area, and I'm not sure about the party window (which I believe shows up in the bottom right, like FFXI, but still) for if it's movable. Unfortunately though, some things which I wish were changeable are not so. For example, the chat window's font size and type ... not changeable. It's rather large and blocky, no matter what resolution you set for the game. At least, that's the current problem, I'm not sure if they're planning on fixing that at all, but many have complained about it.
Movement...Everyone in the forums is saying that the mouse is horrible to move around with, and they're right ... Right click and drag rotates the camera ... one problem though, it 'floats' around. If you drag around, firstly, it uses the point of reference where you began your right-click drag as the 'center' of your camera movement. What this basically means, is that if you drag to the left, and stop the cursor, the camera will continue to turn while you're holding that right mouse button, until either you find that center point where you began your click, or you let go of that click. Therein lies the next problem with camera manipulation with the mouse ... when you let go, the camera doesn't immediately stop... no, it continues to move, but slows down until it finally stops. Thus creating the "floating" camera effect, which is all but annoying. Luckily you can also move the camera around with the IJKL keys like in the compact keyboard layout in FFXI. Unfortunately the arrow keys are not the same way, and also using the IJKL keys like the arrow keys could in FFXI (for navigating the menus) doesn't work either. So, if you want to move the camera with the keyboard, you're stuck with the IJKL keys for the most part for smooth movements, but then you have to use the arrow keys to navigate windows... seeing as the mouse is very hard to worry about (especially with my ATI card being one of ... well ALL ATI cards that currently have issues with the game ... it'll display great graphics, but will have hickups in framerate whenever anything enters or leaves your visual bubble.).
Let's see, anything else yet? don't think so, I think I covered most everything I've gotten the chance to either test myself, or have read about in the forums.
