Then throughout the day, I was tired as all heck, and sat in my chair at my desk. Of course, lucky me, my back started going nuts, and I couldn't move for good portions of the day. Thus, nothing got done around the house. Which to me, sucks royally as I don't like not doing things around the house. So, that was my day yesterday, unable to do much, sleeping the rest.
Lately I'd talked about the FFXIV beta testing, and it was going great to a point. I mean, I enjoy doing caster classes in most MMORPGs, and this is no different. I didn't like the melee classes much due to just how 'simple' it seemed. Unfortunately in the current version of the beta test, mages' MP doesn't refresh while in passive (resting) mode. So mages either have to rely on a weak as snot ability that costs no MP, or to stay around the crystal to recover their MP that way. Main problem with that... the stuff around the crystal at the start is all low level, and to get to the higher stuff would require long walks. Partying yielded much more exp for me, but then the game crashed, and would never let me back in.
While we were waiting for the servers to come live, and even when they did come live with the timeout issues from everyone in the world trying to get in at the same time, someone in the beta-test vent said that they were having a blast with Alien Swarm. This is a FREE game that is on Steam right now. It was created by a crew of modders that Valve had hired to do. This is cool because it shows that if you do mods in your spare time, and do good work at it, Valve may put you on the books to do what you like to do already.
The game itself is pretty awesome. It's a mix of Left 4 Dead, and some other things. It is not a direct port or anything of a mod that was made for Unreal Tournament 2000, but it comes from there (sort of how team fortress classic came to steam). It is a top-down (well, more like 60 degree angle) shooter where you're walking around with up to 3 other players, trying to take out an alien infestation. There are 4 classes you can play, that of; Medic, Special Ops, Officer, and Tech. You don't necessarily need one of each, but it is nice if you do. You almost ALWAYS need a tech though to be able to hack into things to continue a level.
As you complete stages, you gain levels. But these levels aren't specifically for whichever class you chose, but overall. Which is nice, as things start unlocking for you each level for you to use, sometimes as different classes. I myself tend to be a Tech, as it's cool to be able to hack things, weld doors, and other cool things. Granted, in the last few campaign levels a medic is just as important. See, there's these face humpers, sort of like headcrabs. The main difference? They hop on your head, lay an egg that hatches very fast, and well, where the egg is laid is in your head. So you may see where this is going. Without a medic, you die, and then you have two parasites jumping around to other teammates. Thus wiping your team pretty quickly.
There are a variety of weapons, to use throughout the game, and something like 61 achievements you can do while playing. There are methods in the console to make it where you're in first person, but that is kind of counter-productive. Seeing as it was designed to be a third person shooter, being able to see 360 at all times is crucial.
The cool thing also, is that people are starting to make maps and campaigns. I've seen some that are in the planning stages and they look interesting. You should at the least, try this thing out, as it is free after all, and (at least on my steam) it's on the main shop page to download.
